It was 2007 when I came to the island of Vis for the first time. It was mid July, the peak of the season, and I was aware that it is not the perfect time of the year for a relaxed and calm holiday because most places in Croatia were usually packed with tourists. But, the moment I stepped on Vis I realized that this island could not be compared to any other place I have visited before and the usual rules did not apply there. It felt as if I entered into a sanctuary full of calmness and unspoiled nature where time has different dimension, and allows you to appreciate every moment of the day. Every period of the day on Vis has its own beauty and it is special in its own way. There are so many things that I truly love about this island that I cannot distinguish which one I love the most. I love the moments before sunrise, when the colors are surreal and incredibly beautiful, the nature is still sleepy, but at the same time fully present and perfectly synchronized. My favorite spot for enjoying the sunrise is from the hills above Zaglav bay and each time I find myself there I feel as if all my senses are having a feast. The smell of the sea combined with the smell of the rosemaries, and pine trees that can be felt throughout the whole day somehow have the strongest smell in the morning. I love the moment when the sun lightens up the horizon and fills my heart with joy and gratefulness for having the opportunity to start yet another day on this island. I also love the sunny summer days that are full of life, happiness and children’s laughter. I love it that the island embraces everyone, and makes every soul feel welcome, so that you never have the feeling that the island is over crowded or that any soul is an extra on the island.
It’s been 9 years since the first time I put my foot on this island. During all these years the island has came to be my place for a yearly recharge that fills me with energy and joy that keeps me running throughout the whole year. Here I am again…tonight the moon is full. I went with my friends to try out stand up paddle under the moon, and then we enjoyed night swimming. It felt amazing and I felt the special magic in the evenings. You become one with the universe, and it becomes perfectly clear that we are all made of stardust.
